1700s, Esopus, New York's Hudson Valley.
Discovered by a Dutch settler named Spitzenburg.
Thomas Jefferson's favorite apple.
In 1790 he ordered 12 trees to plant at Monticello.
Washington Irving had two trees at his home, "Sunnyside".
Good fresh, in applesauce, pie, or a tarte tatin.
