ASHMEAD'S KERNEL (1 graft). 1700's, Gloucester, England. Homely antique variety, grown for flavor. Planted from seed, or "kernel," by a Dr. Ashmead. Ripens September-October, intense flavor sweetens in storage. Good for cider, cooking, and to store for winter eating. Rated fifth in tests by Royal Horticultural Society. Said to store well, increasing in sweetness, up to 12 months. |
